Homeleigh Water Tower

Heavy lift to the rescue!

This stunning East London water tower brought essential services to one of the Buffalo City's major suburbs with an award winning lift technique.
This project cast the shaft and bowl of the Homeleigh water tower simultaneously and then lifted the bowl into place using steel cables. The total weight of the bowl was a massive 640 tonnes. This was the first time that any lift of this magnitude had been attempted in South Africa.
The lifting was completed in six phases and was developed in response to a shortage of steel scaffolding. The 25m hoist was accomplished with four 350 tonne hydraulic jacks mounted on top of the shaft and took five days to complete after a week of preparations. The team had to contend with wind speeds of up to 70km per hour during the lift.
