PG Bison eMkhondo Plant Phase 3 Upgrade

Pioneering Infrastructure for Modern Production

The PG Bison Phase 3 project represents a transformative upgrade to the eMkhondo plant, further enhancing its production capabilities. Led by CBM Africa, this phase focuses on the comprehensive civil and structural engineering design necessary to support a new Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) production line. With a project value of R450 million, this phase underscores a significant investment in the plant's future.
This phase of the project encompassed a wide array of civil engineering tasks — from the design of earthworks, hardstanding and stormwater management, to bulk water reticulation and storage solutions and onsite sewage reticulation systems.

Advanced Civil Engineering Solutions

A key highlight of this project is the modular on-site integrated water and wastewater package treatment plant, which utilises ultrafiltration (UF) and reverse osmosis technologies.
  • 7 000m3 Concrete Hardstand
  • 150 000m3 Bulk Earthworks
  • 109 000 tonnes Crushed Aggregates Quarried
  • 4.5 million litres of Water Storage
  • 26 km Rising Main ø110mm-ø200mm
  • 6 Boreholes producing up to 20 litres/sec
  • 1.2 million litres/day Treatment Plant

This innovative system ensures that borehole water is treated to potable standards, while industrial and domestic effluent is treated to process water standards, reflecting a commitment to sustainable water management practices.

Comprehensive Structural Engineering

The structural scope of Phase 3 is equally ambitious, involving a major factory upgrade to accommodate the new Fibreboard production line.
CBM Africa's expertise is demonstrated through detailed structural designs, construction drawings, fabrication drawings, and 3D models for all reinforced concrete (RC) and structural steel elements.
This phase required the use of approximately 495 tonnes of reinforcing steel, 8 500m³ of structural concrete, and 1 350 tonnes of structural steel, including fabrication drawings, all completed within an 18-month period. These efforts ensure that the new production line is supported by a robust and reliable structural framework.
Managed by CBM Africa, the project embodies a commitment to advancing industrial capabilities through innovative engineering solutions. This phase not only expands the plant's production capacity but also integrates sustainable practices, setting a new benchmark for future developments in the sector.
