Improving Industrial Water Infrastructure

Fire and Domestic Water Pump Station

In a notable project valued at R24.4 million, CBM Africa undertook the design and implementation of a sophisticated fire and domestic water pump station for an industrial manufacturing client. This initiative was aimed at bolstering the facility’s water management capabilities, ensuring a reliable and efficient water supply for both fire protection and domestic use.

Structural and Hydraulic Engineering Excellence

The project involved comprehensive structural design, including the reinforced concrete pump station, tank ring beams, and service duct. CBM Africa’s expertise in structural engineering ensured that these critical components were designed to withstand operational demands and provide support. The chosen site was located over an old stream and required cut to fill operations and all foundations for the storage tanks and pump station to be piled. In total 385m3 of concrete was used and 29 tonnes of reinforcing were used to construct the RC elements of the plant.
The project included the modelling and calibration of the manufacturing plant’s domestic water usage in order to size and programme a pump system that could maintain sustained water pressures within the plant in the event of municipal water outages. The four tanks each had a capacity of 580 thousand litres (9.8m diameter and 9.4m) in size and capable of storing 48 hours of storage. 620 meters of ø100 to ø250mm domestic pipework was installed, capable of delivering 50 litres per second of domestic water at a sustained pressure of 7.5bar.

Integrated Water Solutions

CBM Africa’s approach integrated both structural and hydraulic engineering solutions to deliver a high-performance pump station. The careful design of the storage tanks and reticulation systems addressed the client’s needs for both fire protection and daily water use, while the surface drainage solutions managed runoff effectively, preventing potential water-related issues.
This project highlights CBM Africa’s ability to deliver complex industrial water infrastructure solutions, combining structural integrity with advanced hydraulic design to support the operational needs of manufacturing facilities. The successful implementation of the fire and domestic water pump station underscores CBM Africa’s commitment to enhancing industrial efficiency through innovative water management solutions.

Seamless Integration Ensures Uninterrupted Production

Integrating the new domestic water supply with the operational requirements of the remainder of the plant was challenging and required meticulous timing and pre-arrangement. Any missteps could have halted production, incurring heavy penalties. To avoid disruptions, the pumps had to be commissioned and tested without interrupting the plant's water flow. As much testing and commissioning as possible was performed while the system was offline, with online testing occurring after hours or on non-production days. Once fully integrated into the domestic supply system, the new pump station operated seamlessly, with the client’s maintenance team barely noticing the domestic pumps' operation. This integration allowed the plant to maintain continuous production, ensuring production targets were successfully achieved.
