Expanding Industrial Capabilities

The Coega Development Corporation's (CDC) Industrial Development Zone (IDZ) is a key hub for industrial growth and development in the Eastern Cape. Enabling works to Zone 10, with a project value of R180 million, is a comprehensive effort to enhance the zone's infrastructure, ensuring it meets the demands of modern industrial activities. This project focuses on, amongst other disciplines, the design and construction of critical civil infrastructure to support further development within the zone.

A significant aspect of the upgrade involves the development of a robust road network. This includes the construction of both dual and single carriageway roads, designed to facilitate efficient transportation and connectivity within Zone 10. Complementing the road network, the project includes the design of stormwater services featuring 4.5km of pipelines ranging from ø450mm to ø1200mm, ensuring effective water management and flood prevention.

The project also focuses on upgrading the sewerage and water reticulation systems. This includes the design of 1.9km of sewerage pipelines ranging from ø160mm to ø400mm, a new pump station (capable of delivering 22.5lps against 85m of head) and a 1.2km ø250mm rising main. These enhancements are crucial for maintaining sanitary conditions and supporting industrial activities within the zone. In addition, the water reticulation system will be significantly improved with the installation of approximately 4.9km of pipelines, varying from ø110mm to ø450mm, ensuring a reliable water supply to meet the needs of the industrial units.

Extensive value-engineering exercises were conducted to optimise designs to align with client budgets, while simultaneously maintaining design integrity. We also provided innovative, eco-friendly stormwater runoff solutions. We worked collaboratively with the appointed contractor, allowing for the successful completion of the project within budget and on programme.

To accommodate future developments and ensure seamless service provision, the project includes the installation of ducts at intersections and along service corridors. This foresight in design allows for the easy integration of additional services as the zone continues to expand and evolve.

The upgrades to the Coega Development Corporation's Zone 10 underscore CBM Africa's commitment to delivering state-of-the-art industrial infrastructure. By enhancing the road network, stormwater, sewerage, and water reticulation systems, this project not only supports current industrial activities but also lays the groundwork for future growth and development in the Coega IDZ.
